It was a quiet November morning when we arrived at Peckforton Castle in Cheshire, ready to capture wedding photography and videography. The autumnal leaves were still strikingly visible. The red bricks from the Victorian country house matched the orange and red tones of the leaves. We couldn’t help but stop and take in the view. For a moment, we almost forgot we had a wedding to capture (!) “Oh yeah, still need to get the equipment from the car!” As we walked through the grounds of the castle, the building surrounded us like an archway. The closer we were to the entrance, the more epic it looked. We probably looked like ants from the drone footage. You could almost grasp the scale of this venue as the drone flew higher and higher. It was such a humbling experience being able to photograph and film a wedding at a grand venue like this.
Bride & Groom Preparation
Walking into the bridal preparation room took us back to a different era. The high ceiling with arched bricks made for the perfect backdrop. The pendant lights gave a warm ambience. Two long ornamental windows provided just enough natural light for the makeup artist to work on. The room where the groom prep took place also had plenty of side lighting from the windows, perfect for wedding photography. Traditional decorations such as the deer ornament and large gold wall mirror added character to the rooms. Some rooms had four-poster beds which looked timeless and elegant. Another bonus of four-poster beds is being able to hang wedding dresses and suits on the tester. It was an honour for us to capture the bride and groom getting ready for their big day. We made sure to blend in and snap natural moments of people having a drink and enjoying each other’s company. While waiting for their turn to have makeup done, some bridesmaids indulged in a delicious-looking English breakfast. Not going to lie; looking at the food through our cameras made us drool.
A Fairytale Ceremony in the Great Hall
Stepping into the Great Hall (ceremony room) - “Is this real or are we in a movie?” I asked Emile. The vaulted ceiling made for a classic backdrop. The red sandstone walls looked stunning and elegant! Nicky and Liam said “I do” on the red carpet in the presence of 100 guests and the knight statue. Right after the wedding ceremony ended, the toastmaster, Ian, asked everyone to stay for the big group shot. He had Nicky and Liam stand in the middle, surrounded by all the guests. We went upstairs to the balcony to get a good angle. Emile snapped a few shots while I filmed guests waving their hands and cheering. It was probably the quickest and easiest group shot we have captured at weddings! We would always say yes to photographing and filming a wedding at this setting a million times, so if you are looking for a wedding photographer or videographer, you know who to call.
Peckforton Castle – The Perfect Backdrop for Wedding Photography
Peckforton Castle has a variety of group and couple shoot options. One was the wine cellar. The bridal party group shots worked perfectly. The tiled floor and the stoned pillars created a great contrast against the grey suits and the white dress. The bridesmaids’ purple dresses perfectly complimented the room’s orange and brown tones. Another perfect photo and video opportunity was the smoke bombs. The purple and white colours of the smoke bombs matched the outfits of the bridal party. All it took was a few minutes, and the results were spectacular! Peckforton Castle had plenty of outdoor grounds to use for moments like these!
After dinner, we were able to grab Nicky and Liam for more couple shots in the lower level. The hallway with stoned walls, dim lights and red carpet looked like a great spot for some natural shots. We had them running towards us from the other end of the hallway, and the shots were some of the best ones of the day! Who would have thought that asking a couple to run would be so much fun? No matter what happens, we can never ever forget to get a shot or two on the stairs! It is a signature of being married at Peckforton Castle! Emile asked the couple to stand just under the chandelier lights and face each other. If you love a romantic look, this would be the ideal shot!
An Unforgettable Wedding Reception in the Great Hall
The night ended with everyone back in the Great Hall for the party! There was a band with a saxophone playing, and people were having fun with the glow sticks! We had plenty of space to move around and capture the action without intruding on the guests. The balcony was perfect for some wide shots of everyone dancing! At the end of the day, we decided the Great Hall was our favourite room at Peckforton Castle. It was spacious and beautiful! We were amazed by the fact that you could have between 2 to 160 guests for the ceremony, which is a wide range! The drawing room, where the wedding breakfast and speeches took place, was stunning as well. There were many other rooms for guests to chill in if they needed some quiet time, which was useful for a whole-day event like the wedding! Before the wedding, we were able to explore Peckforton Castle on the website using their 3D 360 walkthroughs, but on the day, we were blown away by how much more epic and charming it was in real life! One day was certainly not enough to capture all of its beauty! As we were packing away, bittersweet feelings flooded in as a reminder that it was time to leave the fairytale and return to reality, as much as we were reluctant to. This blog is a testimony that beautiful moments end, but beautiful memories don’t.
